The liturgical season of Advent had its roots in the first two centuries of Christianity as a time of preparation for the Second Coming of Christ. When the feast of Christmas was established in 354, the Advent movement became also a preparation for celebrating the “First Coming”. Since Lent had been developed as a preparation for Easter, a spirit of fasting / penance was added to Advent. We will discuss these and several other interesting transitions with a pastoral goal. Can we learn from them some ways to make our own approach to 21st century Advent a more deeply spiritual and energizing experience.
