Have you ever felt discouraged and disappointed with God and life? Did you think you were foolish for believing in Jesus in view of all the chaos in the Church and in the world around you? The two disciples on the road to Emmaus would understand your feelings. St. Luke captures their utter dejection after the death of their friend and Lord. Their hopes and dreams collapsed around them. The evangelist weaves a touching story of a chance encounter with a “stranger” that opens their minds, hearts and souls to the hidden plan of God.
In a sense, their story is our story. We are all on a journey. Through the ups and downs of life, we encounter Jesus in many different ways. Through prayer, Scriptures, and the sacraments, we keep connected to Jesus and the Body of Christ. Sometimes we meet strangers on the road whose testimony causes our hearts to be on fire again. Let us be grateful for these surprise encounters, and look for opportunities to be that stranger for someone else. Evening will conclude with the celebration of the Eucharist.
